The artwork is a view of the extensive Plum Garden in the Kamata area, south of Ōmori, Japan. The estate was open to the public, complete with teahouses and a restaurant, and dated from the early Bunsei Period (1818-1830).

Utagawa Hiroshige is recognised as a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, having created 8,000 prints of everyday life and landscape in Edo-period Japan with a splendid, saturated ambience.
